Monday meltdown!

The day started with frozen blueberries in my oatmeal, which basically looked like unappetizing blue soup:

Then I went to campus forever and became increasingly distressed about my various research projects, as well as about my life choices. This week, existential malaise is the name of the game.

For lunch, I ate leftover curried chicken casserole out of my supremely dorky lunchbox. It's not just an infatuation. My love for my dorky lunchbox is the real deal. (Eventually, I may be offering a 10%-off coupon from Laptop Lunches, so stay tuned for an undetermined period of time.)

I went to the library to get some books for a project, and I found a cute French cookbook from the 1950's (fortuitously translated into English) with a bunch of oddball quotes and maxims about food. Some of them are not very funny or comprehensible, but much like Julie, they are very French and charming in their own way.

"Oysters are over, cabbages too,
June, July, and August through."

In the afternoon, I went for a four-mile recovery run in the cold and wind. Fortunately, the gods of running smiled mercifully upon me, and it was a good run. I ran around the south part of campus which includes my favorite mini-hill and takes me by a couple barns and cow pastures. I'm pleased to have run somewhat negative splits today because 1) that means I am not too sore from yesterday's 9-mile long run and 2) the second half of the run was into the devil-wind.
  • Mile 1: 9:32
  • Mile 2: 9:08
  • Mile 3: 9:15
  • Mile 4: 8:40
  • .1 mile nubbin: 0:59
Immediately after my run, I changed into a t-shirt and shorts and went to Kick 'N Core with my favorite male attendee, Dan. Today was pretty rough, and unfortunately, they were filming a video for God knows what kind of inconvenient reason. I hope I stood far enough away from the camera because certainly, my dead expression and lackluster attempts to round-house kick and punch won't do anything to increase class attendance. And that's fo' sho'!

I am loathe to admit that during dinner, I had a breakdown in regards to my workload. It must be noted that I am notorious for stressing about things that do not matter and often get my panties in a bunch over things that are not due for awhile. I am better now, but there was a 20-minute period where I was silently inconsolable.

After many deep breaths and a healthy banana doughnut (lovingly crafted by Roommate Tina), I have half-way accepted that I cannot always be on top of my work. Really, I should just stop whining because I'm getting paid (albeit not as much as I could be outside of academia) to study what I like. [However, Dan, I still think we should be femmes au foyer together!]

After reading some nonsense about a 17th century French cookbook, I made hummus à la Emily. It is pretty delicious, but the picture makes it look a little like weird poo-poo.

On that note, time for bed. I think I'm going to take tomorrow off from running since a pre-6am run doesn't sound all that appealing at the moment...

Eh... frozen blueberries in oatmeal? That's new to me since here we eat our oatmeal usually quite plain just with sugar and milk.

Um... that "blue soup" does look a little scary. You are running faster and faster young lady!! I think we should all run together as a group and try to sub-4 in Chicago! :-)

I've seen lap top lunch boxes before and I must say, I think they're rather neat! : )

Have a great Tuesday!! : )

I love your lunchbox [you know I'm a sucker for brightly colored things]! Staying tuned...

Good job on the run. I wasn't feeling hard core yesterday and went to bed early like a grandma. haha.

I think I have a meltdown at least once a week. It must be a grad school thing.

Thanks for the hummus shout-out!

I think your day was bad because all of your food looked gross visually. Have something pretty today. :)

I think your laptop lunch is just adorable and not dorky in the least. But I dont know if my opinion matters too much considering that I am a huge dork as well.

I hope your not stressing too much because of your work, hang in there, you can do it!!

Hope your having a great day today, with NO stress and lots of yummy hummus :)

Banana doughnut?!?!?!!? Does roommate Tina have a recipe?

Hope today is a great day and existential malaise has turned into a childlike delight with being alive. And if the "you only get one life" comment above threw you into futher existential turmoil, I will toss you a cheerful, Hindu, "Don't worry, in your next life you may be a simple illiterate peasant who need not worry about things like papers and classes but instead spends your life pushing wheelbarrows and whistling as you work."

Delurking here! I'm also in my first year of grad school and had a meltdown last week (tears included), so just know that you're not alone. :) at ALL. Anyway, one thing I love about your blog is how funny and upbeat you seem (even if you are having a meltdown). Running is what's keeping me sane!
