I eat too quickly.

Do you eat really quickly? I do.

Basically, our dinners look like this: the boyfriend eats his food slowly and chews thoughtfully before swallowing. (Though oftentimes, he overstuffs his mouth and can't talk.) I, like an uncouth cavewoman, inhale my food and sometimes get bored and go check my e-mail/start dishes/play with Bodger while he's still eating.

After dinner, like right now, I often feel kind of full and bloated...probably because I inhaled a lot of air while shoveling in my grub. I spend most evenings burping while trying to do my homework. Attractive, I know.

Does anyone else do this? Am I the only person who attacks her place with great voracity? Do your feel bloated after you eat quickly?

Most importantly, do you have any tips for overcoming rapid eating?

Unfortunately, the boyfriend is one of those perplexing "intuitive" eaters, so he's no help at all.

I hate all-text posts, so here's a photo of a connection I made with a neat group of people from last weekend. I am friends with Jeanie (in purple), who is a student at the University. She is half-Korean, and her mom and step-dad live in Northern Virginia. Kelly (her mom, in maroon) and Tim (her stepdad, the tall one) run basically a butt-ton of races each year and are super fit.

When I run the Marine Corps marathon in the fall, Kelly has invited me to stay at her house. Very cool. Kelly was also very helpful in trying to explain the societal constraints on Korean women back in March when my birth family search exploded.

(Also pictured: Jeanie's brother Raymond and her boyfriend Daniel)

Who knew? I am apparently short.

I eat fast too! And whenever Brandon and I go out to eat, we both eat really fast so we never get the chance to talk. We always tell ourselves that we'll eat slower and spend some time talking. It never happens.

I just try to eat out with other people so I'm talking and slowing down.

Hi Mica! I eat too fast as well. Sometimes I remember to be more mindful of what I'm eating, and savor and enjoy it, but other times I just snarf it down. If I'm out with friends it's not too hard -- I'm usually the last one done. But when I'm eating alone, I tend to eat fast. I think as I become more aware of portion size (and yes, this is something I still need to work on), I will also try to be more aware of what I'm eating, and hopefully that will slow me down.

Ha! You know I have that problem. My tips are to eat at the table, put the fork down between bites, count your chews (sucks) and engage in convo. Yeah. I don't do these things very well. Maybe we can learn together.

I don't mind a pic or two but HATE all picture posts. ;) (well, when it is ALL food, ha ha ha!)

How cool that you are staying with Kelly!

I sometimes eat fast, but I kind of stopped because it was a rather uncomfortable feeling. To (sort of) remedy this, I made sure to take a couple bites, then put my fork down and sip water or talk (or read or check emails), then resume eating. It also helps when I'm "reviewing" food for a blog post to eat slowly so I can identify the flavors.

I always eat too fast too...and def swallow much air = severe bloating. and the only thing to remedy it is to lay on my belly on the floor. i know, awesome right?

I've tried several strategies to stop eating fast: certain number of bites, eating with the opposite hand, lay utensils down between each bite...none of them worked for me. maybe one could work for you!

My only trick is to eat with my left hand or use chopsticks. I'm good with the chopsticks, but not so good that I eat as fast as when I use a fork.

I have this issue too and am constantly burping. What helps me is if I sit there and really think about what i'm eating and focus on what each bite tastes like and try to find something new with each one (chewey vs. saucey vs. juicy....).

Also maybe talk a little that slows you down :D

hi mica!! i'm glad you commented on my blog so i could find your awesome blog! i was reading your previous posts and i understand your decision not to continue on for a PhD. i was also toying with the idea of getting a PhD after my MA, but i don't love the subject enough to devote the next 5-6 years to it and do insane amount of research on it. my boyfriend is getting his MA in Hong Kong right now, and he recently suggested that we form a silly little band after graduation because he's totally over academia and loves his ukulele. that reminded me of what you said about the waffle truck. :P we deserve to do something we love!

oh, and i definitely eat way too fast as well. i feel full and bloated afterwards, but i'm not sure if it's air... maybe i just ate too much, but didn't realize it because i was going too fast!

Why is it still too cold her to wear shorts!

I eat really fast sometimes, too. I also get really shaky and weird right before I eat sometimes because I am so hyper and excited to eat...

I inhale my food. Mr. Pi hates it. I wish I ate slower but I just don't and seemingly can't =).
